The 2017 GoPro Mountain Games are proud to say that the men’s and women’s U.S. Mountain Running Champions will both be on hand to compete for the $5,500 prize purse in the Superfeet 10K Spring Runoff, which will take place on the original Vail Mountain course once used for the U.S. Trail Running championships. Joseph Gray has won the past three in a row and, as the reigning World Mountain Running Champion, is expected to take home the $1,200 prize once again.
Joseph is outspoken about the difficulties presented by the use of performance enhancing drugs – and an overall lack of testing – in his sport. As the only top-tier African American mountain runner on the U.S. Team, Joseph also shares a unique perspective on issues of ethnicity in mountain sports: “I don’t want to just be the best African American, I want to be the best athlete in general,” he told Runner’s World.
