*NEW EVENT FOR 2021* As its name implies, the Gore IV Kayak Challenge is a 4 mile downriver time trial through the Class IV playground of lower Gore Creek west of International Bridge. This competition is geared towards Class IV kayakers who love a good ol’ sprint to the finish. Do you have the skills and speed to be crowned our first Gore IV champion?

IMPORTANT: Registration for this event closes Thursday, June 10 at 6:00 PM. Start lists will be posted Thursday, June 10 at 8:00 PM. Athletes should arrive at the put-in no less than 45 minutes before their race start time to go through gear check, attend safety meeting and pick up their competition bib.

Rules

CATEGORIES:

EQUIPMENT:
  • Whitewater specific boats only.
  • Boats may not exceed 9.5’ in length. All boats will be measured at the start of the race.
  • Boats must be plastic, production whitewater creek boats with bulkhead footrests and appropriate grab-handles.
  • Pre-production, modified or non-creek specific boats within the standards of modern creek-specific designs may be allowed, but only with prior approval of the Race Directors.
  • Athletes must dress for creek-boating Class IV whitewater; Rescue-certified PFDs are recommended. Helmet, protective footwear, and a dry-top, paddling jacket or wetsuit are mandatory.
  • Unsafe or excessively used equipment (such as: excessively worn PFDs, unsuitable helmets, damaged boats, spray skirts with holes, inadequate footwear etc.) may be deemed unsuitable.
  • Throw bag required. Float bags strongly encouraged.
  • Athletes must wear competitor bibs outside their PFDs at all times. For athletes that place on the podium, we ask that you wear your competitor bib for awards.
  • Event organizers and whitewater rescue teams are not responsible for equipment rescue and/or equipment removal from the GoPro Mountain Games whitewater courses should athletes lose their equipment during practice or competition.
FORMAT & RULES:
  • The Gore IV Kayak Challenge is for Class IV kayakers. The course is on lower Gore Creek west of International Bridge and is approximately 4 miles long. All competitors must have successfully navigated the course prior to the competition.
  • The race is run in time trial format. Athletes will start in thirty (30) second intervals and starting positions will be determined by registration date. Special requests for start times (even to allow kayak-sharing) will not be accepted, and no start-time swapping is allowed. Athletes must be ready at their designated starting time.
  • Paddlers who lose their equipment and require a rescue of any kind and/or appear to be excessively falling and swimming will be pulled from the course by our safety team. Paddlers who lose their gear and exit the river will receive a DNF.
  • If a paddler is being overtaken by another “faster” paddler from behind, they must yield to the faster/overtaking paddler in a safe and respectful manner. This will not affect a penalty or DQ unless the paddler being overtaken used blocking or any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • Please obey all access and trespassing signage. This race runs through private property. No access to private property at any time.
Location:

The course will start at the International Bridge in Vail Village and finish at Stephens Park.

COVID-19 PROTOCOLS:
  • RACE DAY PROTOCOL
    • Athletes will be sent out in (30) second intervals.
    • Staff, signs and ground markings will ensure proper physical distancing as athletes stage prior to the start of the race.
    • Athletes must wear a face mask in the start and finish areas.
    • Athletes may remove their mask once they enter the water at the race start.
    • At the end of the race, athletes are asked to wear their mask.
    • Athletes will adhere to all physical distancing protocols at the start and finish lines.
    • Spectating is discouraged.
