Athletes to Watch: Brodie the Goldendoodle

“Athlete” is definitely a stretch to describe Brodie, the 3-year-old Goldendoodle social media sensation who will be making his first ever appearance at the GoPro Mountain Games this summer.

Brodie the Goldendoodle and his owner, Cliff Brush, will be at the 2022 GoPro Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado.

Check out Brodie’s Instagram account (which has more than 600,000 followers) and you’ll find the 90-pound Golden Retriever/poodle mix fly fishing, cycling (as a passenger in owner Cliff Brush’s backpack) and chilling on the couch rocking a man bun (if you think dogs can’t have man buns, think again).

There has been talk about the Florida-based canine entering the amateur DockDogs event this summer (Orijen Try DockDogs), but jumping into water doesn’t appear to come naturally for the Chewbacca lookalike. Plus, Brush is hesitant to ruin Brodie’s trademark poof if he takes a dunk.

“I don’t know if he’ll do it. He’s a big baby, uneasy about a lot of things, including the act of jumping off the dock. If he sees other dogs doing it, he might,” Brush says. “The other factor is his coat. He has to get professionally groomed every two weeks. He can’t just air dry and it’s all good.”

When asked about Brodie’s physical talents, Brush points out that his strengths lie outside of the norm among four-legged athletes.

“To be honest, he’s a little uncoordinated,” Brush says. “Traditional athleticism is not his strongest point. He’s not good at catching and timing or typical dog things. He does cool tricks like hang his arm out the car window and sit on the couch like a person. He loves the wind in his face. And he is a great copilot.”

Brodie’s best trick, however, is warming hearts.

“He lives for attention,” Brush says. “He’s a performer. He thrives when everyone is loving on him. That’s his calling. It’s what he was put on this earth to do … to make people smile and to bring joy.”
