Event Overview

SUNDAY, JUNE 13

10:00 AM

The 8-Ball Kayak Sprint is a whitewater battle royale sprint to the finish. After a floating start at the Covered Bridge, as many as ten kayakers will push, shove, and jostle their way through a 200-meter sprint in the narrow confines of Gore Creek. Along the way, boaters must avoid being knocked off by the 8-Ballers – loathsome kayakers in full body armor waiting patiently to attack the sprinters and slow them down throughout the course.

IMPORTANT: Athletes must check-in at the GoPro Mountain Games Whitewater HQ tent along Gore Creek (right near Up the Creek restaurant) no less than thirty (30) minutes before competition start. Registration for this event closes Saturday, June 12 at 6:00 pm.

Rules

CATEGORIES:

Open – Men
Open – Women

EQUIPMENT:
  • Boat Lengths: 9′ or smaller.
  • PFD, helmet, protective footwear, and a dry-top, paddling jacket or wetsuit are mandatory.
  • Gloves, full-face helmets, elbow pads, chest and rib protection strongly recommended.
  • Athletes must wear competitor bibs outside their PFDs at all times. For athletes that place on the podium, we ask that you wear your competitor bib for awards
FORMAT & RULES:
  • Athletes must check in at the GMG Whitewater HQ tent along Gore Creek (right near Up the Creek restaurant) no less than thirty (30) minutes before competition start time.
  • Women will paddle first, followed by men. Athletes will be placed in ‘race pods’ of no more than ten (10) kayakers. Pods will be seeded by the race directors at their discretion with special attention to spread out talent, family, and team members. Special requests for start positions will not be accepted. The final number of pods will be determined the day of the race in accordance with the total number of athletes registered for the race.
  • The race begins with competitors starting in a ‘reverse floating start’ format at the Covered Bridge. When all of the competitors are as close as possible, the starter will blow a horn. Paddlers will then sprint 200 meters down Gore Creek to the ‘finish line’ (in line with the upstream side of the International Bridge). As they paddle, boaters must avoid being pushed off course by the ‘8-Ball kayakers’ who will be positioned along the course. The 8-Ball kayakers’ goal is to impede the forward progress of lead racing kayakers.
  • Both hands must remain on the athlete’s paddle at all times. No intentional grabbing, shoving, hitting or horseplay.
  • Top finishers will advance to the next round. Number of racers advancing will be determined by the number of athletes in each pod. Rounds will continue until a winner is determined.
  • Rules are subject to change, if necessary.
LOCATION:

Race start is located riverside downstream of the Covered Bridge, Vail Village. Race finish is upstream side of International Bridge, Vail Village.
